Biography

Born on the island of Puerto Rico, Andrea Alejandra Jiménez Carrasquillo is a graduate from the Río Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico. Here she obtained a bachelors degree in Sociocultural Anthropology with studies in Fine Arts and a minor in Medical Humanities. Through the upcoming years, she became an active participant of the island’s historical afro-caribbean genre, Puerto Rican Bomba, where she learned the ancestral language of story telling through nonverbal communication. She explored postures, gestures and the national history as told by the people through dance. Andrea then began to combine storytelling with the therapeutic aspects of working with art. Working as a workshop artist in a community shelter for domestic violence survivors, she gained perspective in transgenerational trauma. As a way to develop her research in the matter, she obtained a license as a massage therapist to better her understanding of anatomy and somatic culture. She gained experience working with numerous body types and pathologies throughout the years and explored ways of expression through the arts. In 2021, she became the first Puerto Rican to be accepted in the advanced course of anatomical sculpture in the Florence Academy of Art, Italy, one of the most prestigious academic sculpture programs worldwide, where she is currently a full-time sculpture student and assistant of the Department of Anatomy.
